Prometheus Cave (Region of Imereti)
Prometheus Cave (Kumistavi) (Georgian: პრომეთეს (ყუმისთავის ) მღვიმე ) – A world-class natural monument and a striking example of the limitless possibilities of nature. Its age is approximately 60-70 million years. It is located at a depth of 80 meters below sea level. The total length is 11 km. The air and water temperature in the cave is 14-15ºС all year round. Inside the cave is decorated with calcite dripstone formations: stalactites, stalagmites and stalagnates. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes: long needles sticking out of the ceiling, spherical formations, and unusual flat and twisting shapes. Fossilized underground waterfalls and lakes illuminated by colored lights create a unique spectacle.
The cave has a 1,420-meter-long walking trail that leads to a 380-meter-long lake where you can ride a boat while listening to pleasant music and a laser show. There are 19 species of algae in the cave. About 40 species of insects and invertebrates live here. Fragments of cave bear skeletons, starfish and mollusks from the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era have been found. Six of the 22 halls of different sizes are available to tourists: “Hall of the Argonauts”, “Kolkheti”, “Medea”, “Love”, “Prometheus” and “Iberia”. A beautiful underground river flows in the cave, across which there is a bridge. The river flows into the lake and forms a beautiful underground waterfall. Due to its microclimate, the Prometheus Cave is an effective treatment for people suffering from asthma. The cave is visited by 200,000 people annually.
